it may be time consuming and a little expensive but it would be a definite way to bring out your idea. It helps you put forth your product in front of the consumers and  also gives you  an opportunity to shape up your idea. It is essential to have a call to action button like – purchase, request demonstration, sign up for trial etc to analyse the response and kind of queries generated, which helps in better product development.  You dont have to sell outright ,all you need to know is what is the response to the product you want to build.

There are a lot of forums, both buyer and seller forums.  While selling you need to be where your potential clients are deciding or discussing with others. For eg, To promote travel related site you need to be where tourism is discussed . It helps you understand what the pain points are , how your potential competitors are doing and how you could improve.  You can propose your idea in one of the forums and get first hand response from your clients.
